Extending Valve Index cables
Posted on
The original reach of the cables included with the Valve Index aren't great if you want to have your computer in different location than your play room. I've used the following cables and repeaters with some success to increase the length of the cables by 4 meters. The length is currently limited by the DisplayPort cable I'm using, there are longer cables, each extra meter costs extra though. The biggest issue with finding a cable is to find one that supports the required resolution and refresh rate since the Index can run at 144 Hz at a total resolution of 2880×1600, (1440x1660 per eye). This is what's been working-isch for me so far:
I've had some issues with the HMD loosing picture/going very low fps after 1-2 hours of play of Half Life: Alyx. I think depends on the fact that I have small piece of rope around the Index cable, which bends the cable. The problem usually goes away by carefully janking the cable a bit. See the attached picture for what I mean.
